Getting to the root cause of disruptive uterine concerns can be a frustrating journey. Hysteroscopic surgery offers a direct, incision-free method for your doctor to examine the inside of your uterus. In many cases, certain abnormalities can be treated during the same procedure.

Your healthcare provider may recommend a hysteroscopy if you are experiencing:

This procedure may not be suitable for everyone, including patients with an active pelvic infection. Partnering with experienced minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon Dr. Lily Tsai, MD, can help you find clear answers and a personalized treatment plan.

What to expect before, during and after hysteroscopic surgery

Hysteroscopic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure used to examine the inside of your uterus. A thin, lighted instrument called a hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina and cervix, eliminating the need for abdominal incisions and allowing for a faster recovery compared to more invasive surgeries.

Before the procedure

To determine whether hysteroscopy is right for you, Dr. Tsai will review your symptoms, medical history and treatment goals, along with any imaging tests.

During the procedure

The hysteroscope is gently guided through the cervix and into the uterus. A sterile fluid is introduced to expand the uterine cavity, giving Dr. Tsai a clear view of the uterine lining. This allows her to identify issues such as polyps, fibroids, adhesions, or structural abnormalities. If treatment is necessary, small surgical instruments can be passed through the hysteroscope to address these concerns.

Depending on the procedure’s complexity, it may be performed under local, regional, or general anesthesia.

After the procedure

Hysteroscopic surgery is an outpatient procedure, so you can expect to go home the same day. It is common to experience mild cramping, light bleeding, or temporary discomfort for a few days following the surgery. Dr. Tsai will provide you with clear postoperative instructions, including guidance on activity levels, symptoms to monitor and when to schedule a follow-up appointment.

Please contact our office immediately if you develop a fever, severe abdominal pain, or heavy bleeding.
